Original Craig Street Cats

Macarthur and Winston, Craig St. Cats circa 1942Say hello to Macarthur (Mickey) and Winston, Craig Street Cats from the 1940’s. They are being held by Mrs. Florence Gray, of 480 Craig Street. Mickey belonged to the Grays, and Winston belonged to the Milans, who lived across the street.

This photo is courtesy of Allan Gray, of Austin, Texas. Dr. Gray emailed me yesterday, with wonderful stories about Craig Street during his family’s tenure at 480.

It seems that Mickey and Winston were not the only cats around at that time. The Cormacks, at 486, had a cat with a rather unusual name. Apparently it used to take young Bruce quite a while to call his cat in, because he would have to say, ” Here Petey, Rowdy, Fingal’s Cave, Cornforth, Lightfoot, Pride of the Pampas, Edward the Flowers, and not for you to pick, Cormack.”

Wolseley had character and characters, even then.

Is our colony larger than estimated?

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I’ve been thinking about the cats trapped earlier this month, and I’m a little concerned. 3 of the 4 cats trapped were unknown — I hadn’t seen any of them before finding them in the trap. This could just be a coincidence, or it could mean that the colony is much larger than I had estimated.

I identified approximately 40 adults over this past winter, and I had hoped that was the extent of the colony. The fact that I managed to trap 3 totally unknown adult cats seems to indicate that I was indulging in a little bit of wishful thinking. Here’s hoping that my original estimates were correct, and the “newbies” were just the few that I missed last winter.
