Humane Society’s Free Cat Event Destroys Years of Work to Change Public Perception of Cats

Winnipeg, MB, July 13, 2011:  The Winnipeg Humane Society today announced an event that will destroy years of hard work by cat rescue and adoption organizations.  For many years these organizations have been working diligently to change the public perception that cats have no value.  The WHS is planning to give cats away on Friday July 15.

“They are, in effect, hanging a ‘free to good home’ sign on the front door.” says Craig Street Cats founder, Lynne Scott.  “For years we have struggled to get people to believe that cats have value, that they are worth spending the cost of vaccinations and spay or neuter surgery.  This event undoes all of that hard work.”

According to Scott, giving the cats away free of charge sends the message that they are disposable.  She also says that people place little value on things they get for free, and that the cats given away on Friday are very likely to end up on the street or in other shelters.  “In a city that already has 50,000 to 100,000 homeless cats roaming the streets, we absolutely do not need a major animal welfare agency giving the impression that cats are worthless.”

About Craig Street Cats:  Craig Street Cats is a non-profit organization working to humanely manage feral cat colonies, rescue kittens, and educate the community about feral cats.  It was formed in 2008, in response to the many feral cats and kitten seen roaming Wolseley’s Craig Street in the winter of 2007 - 2008.

due to the postal lockout . . .

June 24th, 2011 by Cat Lady

I’m starting to feel like a broken record. Here we are, once again, at our busiest time of year, with NO MONEY.

Because of the postal lockout:

  • we have not received the first half of our Pepsi grant. We have had to start the project, though, and pay for it with dollars that should have seen us through mid-July.
  • we have not received any of the mail in donations that we normally find in the mail box.
  • we are not able to pay any bills from today on.
  • we must suspend trapping because we cannot pay to have the cats spayed or neutered.
  • we have less than 4 days supply of canned cat food, and no way to buy more
  • we have less than 1 week supply of paper towels, and no way to buy more

We cannot continue like this. Without substantial, ongoing financial support we won’t survive past the end of this year.

Update

May 19th, 2011 by Cat Lady

Things have been incredibly busy around here.  In the weeks leading up to our rummage sale we TNR’d and rescued 31 cats and kittens..  We also managed to complete TNR of 2 colonies; one on Clifton and one on Strathcona.  This means that all of the cats in these 2 colonies have been spayed or neutered, and all of the kittens have been removed for adoption.  17 kittens will be ready for adoption starting mid-June, through to mid-July, depending on their ages and development

In addition to all this, we have over 50 cats and teenaged kittens available for adoption.  As you can imagine, things get rather hectic around here.  We desperately need to find homes for as many cats as possible.  This means that our adult cat adoption fees are reduced to $25 / cat, $40 for 2 cats.  Kittens under 6 months are $125.  Fees include spay or neuter, first shots, deworming and tattoo.

To arrange a viewing please call 223-6652.
