We’re having a barn raising

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

For quite awhile now our wish list has had an entry that reads “8 x 10 insulated storage shed”.  I was pretty sure that entry would stay there for a very long time.  I was wrong.

Yesterday, a very generous donor took me shopping for a brand, spanking new barn style storage shed, complete with floor and second storey loft.  I’m like a little kid at Christmas waiting for it to be delivered.

Of course, the shed will arrive in pieces.  You can’t actually buy a completed shed, you have to buy a ‘kit’.  Then you have to put it together.  Sooooo, once the kit arrives, we’ll be having a good, old fashioned barn raising.  In my back yard.  I may even fire up the barbeque and feed the hungry barn raisers when they’re done ;)

Once the barn is raised, all the cat paraphenelia that we’ve been tripping over for the past 2 years will finally have a home.  The cats and I will be able to move around without shoving things out of the way, and things should be, generally, tidier around here.  I’m so looking forward to that!

Thank you, Pat!

TNR Update

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

April was the first month for TNR (trap / neuter / return), for this year.  We trapped a total of 5 cats and had them sterilized at the WHS.  3 were from Craig Street, and 2 from Dominion St.

April marked the beginning of a new relationship between Craig Street Cats and the Winnipeg Humane Society.  In a meeting with Executive Director, Bill McDonald; Director of Shelter Operations, Lisa Rosin; and Animal Intake Manager, Loretta Purchase; an agreement was reached that will formalize our dealings with each other.  Craig Street Cats is entering into a contract with the Winnipeg Humane Society.  This will eliminate the surprise charges, and allow us to budget our resources.  More information will be posted once the contract is finalized and signed.

Another successful event

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Well, our 2nd annual giant rummage and bake sale is now history, and it was a huge success!  There were a few little glitches, but it was loads of fun and we raised over $3,000 to care for the cats.  Thanks to everyone who came out to support us, and special thanks to the AMAZING volunteers who made it all happen.  Kudos to the staff at R.A. Steen C.C., for a great job and thank you for all your help.

Plans are already in the works for next year’s event.  The planning committee will start meeting in June.  If you would like to be part of this great team, please call 223-6652 and let us know.

Bittersweet week

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

This has been a bittersweet week of both good and bad news.

The good news:  Friday has been adopted.  He went out to a great foster home several weeks ago, and his foster parents decided to adopt him.  I’m sure they’ll all be very happy.

The bad news:  BooBoo was put to sleep this week.  She had been refusing to eat, and the vet found a huge mass in her abdomen.  Surgery was an option, but there was a very low probability of success.  The kindest thing was to let her go.
