Kettle

Kettle

This handsome fellow is Kettle, who comes to us from McGee Street.  He seems to be a young man, but he was outside long enough to lose part of one ear to either frostbite or injury.  Both ears show signs of frostbite, which is a huge danger for cats remaining outdoors during our harsh winters.  When a cat’s ears freeze, the outside edges “die” and can become infected before they quite literally crumble away.  This is a very painful process.  In severe cases cats can lose the entire exterior portion of their ears, as well as their tails.  Extreme cases result in death for the cat.  Kettle is fortunate that he was brought in before Christmas.

Very sick, flea ridden baby

Another very sick, flea ridden baby

These 2 babies came from a small colony on McGee Street.  Both were covered in fleas and suffering from upper respiratory infections with secondary infections of the eyes and nose.  They spent a thrilling week getting subcutaneous fluids and antibiotics every few hours.  Fortunately, they were too sick to do much damage to me in the process.

Both kittens are much better, now.  The smaller baby has been adopted by the person who originally brought her in.  The older baby is going in for neutering next week.

Foster homes desperately needed

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Well, it looks as if there isn’t going to be any down season this year.  We now have a total of 13 cats, 8 of which need foster placement as soon as possible.  If you live in the Winnipeg area. and can foster cats or kittens, please contact us at 788-4645.

Foster families help feral cats and kittens make the transition from street life to pampered petdom.  Many of our rescues would not be adoptable if not for amazing foster homes.  Most of our rescues only need a warm home where they can learn to accept and give love.  Some have special needs that require more care and attention.  All vet costs, and any special needs are covered by Craig Street Cats.
